How difficult is it to replace 1994 Mitsubishi Shogun 2.8 clutch?

My clutch is slipping and needs replacing, i have tackled this in many cars but it 'looks' like a much more difficult job.

Is this a difficult job to do myself ?

Does ayone have any suggestions about how to do it or any useful tips?

It is a fairly straightforward job, just lots of unbolting.

The big problem, as Stuidoug says, is the sheer weight of the gear box.

You would need 4 people to take it out and put it back without damaging you or the clutch and first motion shaft bearing in the gear box.

We used to use an hydraulic cradle to support the box, both in and out, and it could still be a struggle if the clutch hadn't been aligned correctly.

Good luck.

  • Will a clutch get broken easily because im tryin to learn how to drive manual?

I bought a good car and im scared to practice how to drive it because idont wanna ruin the clutch?

can the clutch take alot? or is it very sensitive?

I wanna learn fast but i dont wanna ruin my car. Will a clutch get broken easily because im tryin to learn how to drive manual? The biggest thing that wears out a clutch is high revs and slipping it a lot - like the racers do. Otherwise they can take a fair amount of abuse and usually last 100k and 200k miles.

No worries, go ahead and practice. Concentrate on learning where the engagement point is and on being smooth. Will a clutch get broken easily because im tryin to learn how to drive manual? When I turned 16 my Mom had just purchased a new standard car. She didn't want me driving it until I had taken a lesson learning how. I borrowed her old car, also 5-speed, and totally ruined the clutch learning how to drive.

I would suggest investing $30ish and taking a Standard Driving Lesson. This will avoid any damage to your new car... and will be well worth the money in the end :) Good luck! Will a clutch get broken easily because im tryin to learn how to drive manual? The clutch will wear out eventually. Just take it easy and get comfortable driving in an empty parking lot or empty road until you can shift smoothly without stalling or jerking. Will a clutch get broken easily because im tryin to learn how to drive manual?yes you can burn out the clutch if you dont know how to drive stick properly, i would suggest practicing on an older car 1st or maybe taking a few manual driving courses to learn how to do it properly so you dont run into the problem of burning out the clutch because clutches are alot of $$$Will a clutch get broken easily because im tryin to learn how to drive manual?Okay, my pastor threatened my life if I rode the clutch which means, when you aren't using it to change gears, put your foot on the floor and do not ever hover over the clutch. There are small exceptions like when you are going up a steep hill and you have a red light, etc... but don't ride the clutch.

If you remember this, you will not wear out your clutch even when you are learning to drive and it if is a reasonably new clutch, you don't have anything to worry about.

*I am sure that Pastor Dave was kidding about prematurely ending my life but you never know about them crazy youth pastors :)Will a clutch get broken easily because im tryin to learn how to drive manual? Here is what to do, go to a parking lot and practice releasing the clutch gradually without pushing the gas pedal until the car is moving. do it several times until you get the feeling of releasing the clutch smoothly. in this case, you will save your clutch. Avoid releasing the clutch slowly on high RPMs.Will a clutch get broken easily because im tryin to learn how to drive manual?Clutches are different in every car but if you don't know what you're doing and your new to driving a stick then yes it can be easily broken. I had a friend in high school who burned hers out when she was learning to drive. Its easier if you have a hill to start on, you can begin by rolling down the hill and then its easier to pop it into 1st, 2nd and so on, sometimes it can be a lot harder on flat or upward hills (obviously) good luck! Will a clutch get broken easily because im tryin to learn how to drive manual?Normally when a person first start and uses a manual transmission they end needed a new clutch. Just take your time and have somebody who know what they are doing with you @ all timesWill a clutch get broken easily because im tryin to learn how to drive manual?I am hoping you bought this car used? I'll just assume...

I'd say it's not so much the clutch, (unless the previous owner beat the hell out of the car), it's a mixture of the the teacher and your personality.

If you respect the car, didn't have everything single thing handed to you on a sliver platter in life, and take the learning seriously, you should be fine.

Starting with the car on a flat road or parking lot. If you can have it in first gear with the clutch in, (car is just sitting no rolling there because it's flat), no gas, no brake - you should be able to slowly let the clutch all the way out and start forward motion without any gas. Your goal is to feel the resistance on the clutch pedal in relation to the speed in which you are letting it out. They always say that's a mild way to start learning without damage.

Have whoever is teaching you to go over a few of the NO-NO's that will ruin the car.

If it's not too old it will have many safety features like redline limiters, and won't go into gears that will shock the drive train.

You'll be fine. Just don't ask me about some of the stories from high school when a friend of mine let 3 or 4 non-stick drivers try his car...

I wanna learn fast but i dont wanna ruin my car. Will a clutch get broken easily because im tryin to learn how to drive manual?congratulations on wanting to learn to drive a manual car. i happened to believe that everyone should learn how to drive stick once in their lifetime. take your car to an empty parking lot or on a lonely street somewhere and learn how to go into 1st gear. you should be able to completely lift your left foot off the clutch.1st gear will be the hardest to learn. just be easy on the clutch and try not to grind your gears. once you get first gear down everything is cake after that. it will take sometime for you to get used to the %26quot;clutching%26quot; but keep at it and it will become like an instinct. Will a clutch get broken easily because im tryin to learn how to drive manual? You have to learn sometime.Try not to ride the clutch to much and it will be fine. Will a clutch get broken easily because im tryin to learn how to drive manual? These are probably not going to be the happiest moments in your clutches life, but don't worry too much. A zillion people have learned how to drive stick, and very few cars were actually killed in the process. Don't pop it, and for god's sake, don't grind the gears. You two will have many happy miles together. Will a clutch get broken easily because im tryin to learn how to drive manual? A clutch is a tough artical but yes it can be damaged.

You need to practice letting it out slowly so as not to jerk the car, but not so slow as to make smoke

Try operating it without the engine running to get used to the weight of the pedal. Don't run the engine at too high a speed and make sure you let off on the pedal to allow the clutch freedom so air will cool it off. Don't keep your foot on it while driving, it will wear out the throw out bearing. Will a clutch get broken easily because im tryin to learn how to drive manual? If the clutch is in good shape it will take it. You will only have a few bunny hop starts before you get the hang of it.It will also help if you find some one that can advise you on driving it. Have fun and enjoy. Will a clutch get broken easily because im tryin to learn how to drive manual?Clutches are tuff but trans gears are less so,they can take a lot but not as much as a clutch. Do you drive now ( auto)? A driving trainer once suggested starting in reverse, you are too distracted by looking back to be worried about the clutch. Will a clutch get broken easily because im tryin to learn how to drive manual?they will usually last a long time. popping the clutch can break it.

1999 Mazda Miata hydraulic clutch fluid leaks out. Must I replace clutch or how can I determine problem?

Stopped at traffic light and was not able to shift to first gear. Clutch goes to floor. Checked fluid level and practically empty. Added more which ran out. Hope I won't have to replace clutch. Would like information before going to garage as I don't know a reputable mechanic in the area.1999 Mazda Miata hydraulic clutch fluid leaks out. Must I replace clutch or how can I determine problem? It is most likely the slave.

I say this for two reasons-

    1. It will work when refilled for a while (it pumps up).

    2. That is the part that went bad on my Miata.1999 Mazda Miata hydraulic clutch fluid leaks out. Must I replace clutch or how can I determine problem?you probably need to replace the master cylinder (if leaking from top of system) or slave cylinder (if leaking from bottom)1999 Mazda Miata hydraulic clutch fluid leaks out. Must I replace clutch or how can I determine problem?I would replace both the master and slave cylinder. That way you are sure to eliminate the problem. Usually when one goes the other isn't to far behind. And another suggestion I would go the the mazda dealer and get the parts. They are brand new as opposed to the reman parts you get at the local chain stores. Yes they will cost more up front, but they will give you the performance of a new part. Instead of relying on someone whose name you can't pronounce to rebuild the part correctly.1999 Mazda Miata hydraulic clutch fluid leaks out. Must I replace clutch or how can I determine problem? If you replaced the slave previously and you checked the master cylinder....then you might want to check the hoses that feed both. You could very well have a cracked hose that is the problem and letting the fluid leak out.

When changing gears on a manual, do you release the clutch all the way before applying the gas?

I just bought a manual transmission car and I got 1 hour lesson from a driving school just to understand the basics. The instructor said when in first gear, I have to release the clutch slowly and apply gas at the same time to keep the rev constant. However when changing from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd, he said to release the clutch slowly all the way and THEN apply the gas...is this true? After doing some reading, it seems whenever you need to shift, you should release the clutch and apply some gas at the same time.

Also, how do you rev match? How do you know what the rev should be compared to how fast you're going? When changing gears on a manual, do you release the clutch all the way before applying the gas?To Take off you need to apply a little gas simultaneously as you slowly relase the clutch pedal

on shifting gears once you're moving this isn't so critical ... the vehicle won't stall or stop... but if not done right or exactly smooth you may get a little lurch or buck out of it until you get the timing and fell of it down...

when it comes time to shift from first to second and so forth you will be cruising along at a semi steady speed then you push ths clutch pedal down move to a new gear and as you begin to release you will add just a very slight pressure more to the gas...

this will sort of feather (smooth out) the transidion from one gear to the next for acceleration...

with practice you will get a feel for this...take a ride with an an experiended manual transmission driver

and have them drive your vehicle while mostly all you do is watch their coordination of clutch shift lever and the gas... it isn't that complex of a dance to learn...

pay attention to how they accelration shift and decekeration shift and come to a stop...

then go to a hill and wath how the brake, clutch and the gas are simultaneously coordinated for starting out on a hill without rolling backward..

My first car was a 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner at 15 but I had learned to drive a manual transmission by 13

hang in there and go practice you'll get it

WaltWhen changing gears on a manual, do you release the clutch all the way before applying the gas?NO!! your vehicale will stall, or you will pop the clutchWhen changing gears on a manual, do you release the clutch all the way before applying the gas? It's better to release the clutch almost completely before hitting the gas again so you won't burn the clutch out. Your best bet would be to shift when the r's are between 2 and 25.When changing gears on a manual, do you release the clutch all the way before applying the gas? Both of them are about right. They go pretty much in sync. When shifting gears try to be precise and avoid leaving your foot on the clutch too long. It will wear it out and it can be pretty expensive.

And depends if you're driving fast or slow but try to keep the revs at about 2,000-4,000 and you should always be around the powerband and not waste gas. Of course, it depends on the car. In my car you only start getting power after 6,500rpm. :DWhen changing gears on a manual, do you release the clutch all the way before applying the gas?It is true ... you have to always maintain some gas because if you don't you are bound to stall the engine , you can play with the clutch allot more frequent , what is critical is maintaining the rpm of the engine , or maintaining the engine alive . Don%26quot;t worry about matching your rpm with your car speed , for one is common sense not to over rev your engine unnecessarily , idle engine usually is 600 rpm .and a comfortable top rpm 3500rpm before shifting or some what less you have to practice and feel comfortable .When changing gears on a manual, do you release the clutch all the way before applying the gas?its hard to explain but easy to show. Well its all about the speed of letting go the clutch while pressing the gas, basically in first gear you let go of clutch very smoothly and slow but when you shift from 4th to 5th you can drop the clutch and press gas, so the higher gear to shift in, less clutch you have to burn. When changing gears on a manual, do you release the clutch all the way before applying the gas?Yes but %26quot;sloooooly' release the clutch while feeding a constant 1,000 rpm's until the the clutch is totally released. Push the gas petal till the tachometer reads 2,000 rpm. Do the same thing till you shift to high gear.

Your driver teacher must own a clutch company because you'll use it up by constantly slipping the clutch. When changing gears on a manual, do you release the clutch all the way before applying the gas?rev match? you will get the feel for it over time. but for now your ears will tell you when things dont match. he's right about starting out. you will get the feel for that also. it doesnt take long. soon you will be able to take off from a stop sign ,at the top of a steep hill. but try to avoid steep streets for awhile.

when going %26quot;up%26quot; through the gears? you only need depressing the clutch just enough to allow the trans to %26quot;slip%26quot; into the next gear.better to be off the gas completely for that moment of change from one gear to the next.most clutchs become fully %26quot;disengaged%26quot; long before the pedal hits the floor.

rev match I think what your asking . would be more related to down shifting. lets say your going 60 mph in 5th if you try to downshift to 2nd your rear tires will lock up because the engine should be at idle because your foot is off the gas.try to avoid making that mistake.but it happens easier than you might think. when down shifting you want to bring the engine back to near the rpm it was before you %26quot; engage%26quot; the clutch after making shift to next lower gear.

you will also learn quickly to depress the clutch all the way right before coming to a stop.or the car will stall everytime

gas is way expensive these days. you will sound cool.but no need to add gas during up shift. complicated as to why. but it has to do with ratios of gears, power to weight ratio of vehical and inertia.or speed of car in motion.

all a clutch does is separate the engine from the trans

just long enough to %26quot;slip%26quot; into the next gear.

%26quot;slipping%26quot; is what makes it all work like it should.

when your clutch starts to slip without you wanting it to?

its time to replace the old clutch with new. the componets that make a clutch work are very much like brake pads or shoes.so the easier you are on it. the longer it will last.

try to avoid congested freeways untill you have driven it for awhile.stop and go traffic hard on a clutch for inexperienced manule trans drivers.but it can be done without harming anything .once you have the hang of it.

you can where out a clutch in a few hours by resting your foot on it while driving. the only times you should ever touch it? starting and stopping/ up and down normal shifting.

driving with a clutch is the fun way to do it. once you have done it for awhile. you wont even have to think about it.

good luck drive carefully and have fun ...........E

How do i identify the right clutch needed?

    i have a 93 integra with what i beleive is a 98 engine in it (b18b1)

does the clutch have to be for the right engine? are clutches universal?

do i have to get a 93 clutch for that car or a 98? please help

    and aslo

Does a bad clutch stop a car from starting? How do i identify the right clutch needed?the only way to really know what clutch you have you have to take it out and the only thing that changes on a clutch is the diameter and the spline so just take it to a auto parts store and they will match it up for you.

and no a bad clutch will not prevent startingHow do i identify the right clutch needed? The clutch matches the transmission. If the same transmission was used in a 93 and a 98 it shouldn't matter.

The only way a bad clutch will prevent the car from starting is if there is a starter kill switch on the clutch. You know, where the clutch pedal has to be pushed down in order for the ignition switch to engage.

People always say an athlete has %26quot;IT%26quot;. What is %26quot;IT%26quot; and who do you think has %26quot;IT%26quot; that is currently playing? Thirdly, What do you think about reggie bush and how do you think he will stack up against the all time greatest running backs of all time? Who do you think is the Most clutch player of all time? If you could pick a player (any sport any time period) to endorse your product who would it be and why? and lastly For all the football fans out there, Who is the greatest Linebacker of all time and why? Who is the most overated player in sports (any sport)?? It was like 1 am but I was eagerly up not losing hope. Ortiz hit a walk-off hr at home in Fenway. I'll never forget that moment. And what's better is that he has a walk-off single the very next game making the series 3-2. As you know we (red sox) went on to win the series in NY and swept the Cards for our first WOrld series victory in 86 years. I get goosebumps everytime i see oriz hitting that walk-off hr in game 4, whut a play. What is the most clutch play you've ever since in sports history?Reggie Miller hitting a three, stealing the inbounds pass, then running behind the 3pt line and swooshing it. Jordan was the best ever with clutch plays. Look at any of his last second shots in the post season and take your choice on which one is the best. I will take the 19 footer against Utah. As for current players, Kobe probably has %26quot;it%26quot; more than anyone else has %26quot;IT%26quot;. To endorse my product, I would take Bo Jackson, because he is the best athlete I have ever seen, and he never got into trouble. Unless we are talking about current players, then I would pick Albert Pujols. The greatest Linebacker of all time is Dick Butkus. Just watch old film of him, and you will know why. It is why the4 best defensive player of the year in college gets the Butkus award. You have to take Wade right now. He has the Ring. Lebron is a very close second though. What is the most clutch play you've ever since in sports history?Carmelo Anthony has the best FG % in the final 2 minutes when it is a 1 possession game. Reggie Bush is fast and has noves but is way too small to become a dominant running back. Most clutch player is between a few but I'll go with my hometown man Chauncey Billups..they don't call him %26quot;Mr. Big Shot%26quot; for no reason. I would pick MJ because he is the best basketball player of all time and he was very well liked. Greatest lineback is Ray Lewis. He is fearsome and is great at what he does. He makes good, hard, clean tackles and is very fast, so he can cover many recievers. His presence is very noticed. Most overrated sports..2 categories: Being drafted, i.e. biggest flop, Darco Milicic and Joey Harrington..these need no explanation. The most overrated player period is Allen Iverson..is he good? without a doubt, but when you are a ball hog and you score 40 pts a game but have less than 2 assists, it shows in your teams' wins and losses.LeBron is definitely better.BTW, wtf kind of nicknames are those you made up? LeBron goes by %26quot;The King%26quot; and Dwyane goes by %26quot;DWade%26quot;. LeBron averages more assists, points and rebounds than Wade, he gets his team into and he knows when to give t up and when to take the shot. What is the most clutch play you've ever since in sports history?I ?Dwyane Wade!!

I find that after I remove the pivot bolt, I move the tip of the clutch opposite of normal operation until it is pointing strait forward, it puts the lever in position to release the cable.

if you do a lot of highway driving

    itll last along time

you could make it last even up to 200,000 miles

i have 103,000 miles on my clutch

    still going strong,

but the last 70k were all pretty much on the interstate

and i read your other questions, said the shop said it was slipping

    just to make sure

here are the ways you can test it

    1. when your cruising along on a highway, or whever, just floor it, if the rmps shoot up and you dont go anywhere, your clutch is slipping,

it might not always do it though

    2. put the car in 4th or 5th gear

and try to take off like you would in first, give it a little extra gas too,

if the car stalls, clutch is good, if it doesnt, clutch is shot

How can I tell if my car's clutch is going bad?

I have a 2004 Saturn Ion and have been having trouble getting the car into 1st gear and an even harder time into reverse. I took it to the dealer they replaced the %26quot;master and slave%26quot; then told me that wasnt the problem. Now they told me the clutch is bad, not covered under warranty and almost $1,000 to fix. I'm just not confident they really know what the problem is because they are only diagnosing via the phone with Saturn Corp and not physically checking it out.

Has anyone else had this happen to them? What else could it be?

ThanksHow can I tell if my car's clutch is going bad?It is not your clutch going out. Many will say it is, but if the clutch is going out your car will slip when trying to accelerate. Meaning the engine will kind of go without the wheels.

I would have suggested the slave/master, but that must not be it.

What you need to do is get someone to help you, and either you or the other person get under your car and watch the slave to see if it is engaging the clutch fully. If so then the problem might be inside the clutch housing. If not it might need to be bleed again or extended to the lever there.

Other thing could cause problems if none of these are the problem then you can email me directly via my profile with more descriptive questions

How can I tell if my car's clutch is going bad?Is it slipping? That is usually the sign of a clutch going bad. Hard to get it into gear does not necessarily mean it is going bad. Is this your first stick car? If it is then you might have not drove it perfectly and it might indeed be the clutch.

My suggestion would be take it to 2 auto repair shops and get more opinions.

My first car was a truck. I had to replace the clutch after 5 years. I didn't know how to drive a stick and I rode the gears too much at the beginning. My 2nd gear would slip and that is when I knew the clutch was going bad. It is easy to screw up a clutch especially if it is your first stick car.How can I tell if my car's clutch is going bad? When clutches start to slip, shifting becomes easier. If the clutch disk is not moving(in and out) on the input shaft, shifting will become harder. Your problem might be a lack of lubricant in the transmission itself. How can I tell if my car's clutch is going bad?If the engine turns the transmission while you try to change gears, you get gear grinding. It is worse at a stop when selecting first or reverse. It would be just as bad selecting another gear, you just don't pick the wrong gear at a stop (try it just to be sure).

If the clutch pedal pushes the master, pushes the slave, pushes the throwout bearing portion is working, then the springs on the pressure plate have lost all stiffness. The clutch is actually working too well - it will not de-clutch. If they replaced the master and slave and didn't bleed the fluid properly it would be the same deal. Are you sure the clutch pedal is on the floor when you try 1st and reverse? Is there a thick floormat in the way?

What happens if you try to start the car in gear with the clutch depressed? If it is hard, go back to bleeding or find a way to check the throwout bearing.

This isn't rocket science. Take it to a local garage and ask if a mechanic can take it for a test drive. How can I tell if my car's clutch is going bad?If they just replaced the master and slave cylinder there should be no reason for the clutch to keep it from going into gear. The stuff they just replaced should guarantee that the engine and tranny are no longer in contact with eachother when you push in the clutch, which means that should not affect your putting it in gear. I suppose there is a chance it has to do with the clutch, but the most common clutch problem is due to wear, and is a slipping clutch when you try to accelerate (rpms go up, speed does not match). Otherwise I would say push in the clutch, if it doesn't want to go in, make sure you are in neutral, push in the clutch and try it again. My husband has a car that can be a real pain to put in first and reverse, and in that instance we know the tranny is kinda worn, but at this time we don't have money to do anything about it. I'm sorry I can't be much help in this instance. I guess the best thing to do would be get a few oppinions like the person who wrote before me said.

How can you start your car without using a starter and w/o popping the clutch?

The compression on my truck is so much that it COULD ruin the engine by popping the clutch, is there any other way to get the job done. I don't think so but never know, there are a lot of trick out there. How can you start your car without using a starter and w/o popping the clutch? You could rig up a hand-operated crank on the front, like cars used to use 100 years ago, I suppose. Is your last name Schwarzenneger, or Ferrigno?

Why is it that the compression is so high again? How can you start your car without using a starter and w/o popping the clutch?if the compression was that high you would ruin your starter or flywheel teeth , not the engine , if the compression is that high just running the engine will ruin the engine , popping the clutch has nothing to do with it, the worst you could do there is the clutch would slip and if it does slip at that low of a speed your clucth would never hold properly hold to drive the vehicle practically.but to answer your question the only way i know to crank it is to put it in gear and tow it, there again if the compression is supposedly that high the clutch will just slip. How can you start your car without using a starter and w/o popping the clutch?if the compression is as high as you say then it would tear the teeth off the flywheel and ruin the starter. How can you start your car without using a starter and w/o popping the clutch?not really tow the vehicle in gear but that does the same as popping the clutch...other than than put an impact on the crank pully bolt but ud have to rig a release mechanism or a ratchet devise or u will kill some 1 not to mention total the vehicle

i suppose a cord wrapped around teh crank pulley or even the flywheel cud pull start it.....but i dont no where ud get sumthing that wud b able to not to mention the problems getting the cord on to start with........

my advice si to either disassemble the engine and build with lower compression or but a high torque starter capable of the job......cas all of these ideas seem to b 1 shot....and seem to have suicidal tendencies in them lolHow can you start your car without using a starter and w/o popping the clutch?Change the engine then you would eliminate the problem and would also know whenever you are out and about it would start for youHow can you start your car without using a starter and w/o popping the clutch?Like the others I don't quite get why it would ruin the engine. The engine drives the car through the clutch, so why shouldn't the clutch drive the engine?

How do I bleed the air out of my clutch system?

    I have a 1990 Cherokee

I let the fluid get very low and now it barely gives me enough pedal to drive. I refilled of course but I don't know how to bleed the system. When I have the pedal depressed it actually engages the clutch slightly sometimes but when I pump it it returns to giving me just enough pedal to work with.

Thanks! How do I bleed the air out of my clutch system?Same as bleeding brakes. Find the slave cylinder and open petcock. Have someone push on clutch pedal all the way down and hold. Close petcock. Repeat until no air is in the line or all old fluid has been replaced. Make sure to keep the master cylinder full during the process. How do I bleed the air out of my clutch system? Some of the Jeeps in that vintage use a %26quot;self bleeding%26quot; master and clutch cylinder assembly. If it does not have any internal or external leaks filling it up with fresh fluid and gently pump the pedal several times should solve your problem. If your clutch is worn out this will not resolve the problem. If there is no bleeder screw on the slave cylinder this is the system you have. How do I bleed the air out of my clutch system?I have never seen a hydraulic clutch system lose fluid. So, before bleeding the air out of the system, find out where the fluid is going and replace the faulty part(s).

After that, look for a bleed port on the slave cylinder. It should be bled using the same process as hydraulic brakes. How do I bleed the air out of my clutch system?you have to gravity bleed a clutch system out if you keep pumping the pedal it will damage the master cylinder on it, open a bleeder on the bottom and allow it to start running clear fluid from it and catch in a container so it wont eat the paint off what ever it touches and once it start running clear fluid then close it off,but don't let it run dry or you,ll have to start all over again with the whole process,it takes about an hour to get one bleed out real good ,good luck.

  • How do i know if my clutch is going bad on honda 400ex?

After pulling my friends rubicon out of a swamp, i noticed my clutch wasn't catching until it was almost all the way let out( it used to catch about half-way out) also sometimes it's a little sticky getting into gears. is the clutch wearing out? if so is it really hard to change or should i just take it in?How do i know if my clutch is going bad on honda 400ex?Its possible you may be able to adjust your clutch cable or linkage to fix this but if not and you are comfortable with mechanics its not that difficult to rebuild the clutch. Be sure to get the manual and follow directions and you should be fine. Try your local library(they usually have repair manuals available) and look in the manual first before you decide if you are up to the job or not .If it seems like something you can handle and you have all the necessary tools then go for it.How do i know if my clutch is going bad on honda 400ex?Wearing How about torn out

Adj may help but its not fixedHow do i know if my clutch is going bad on honda 400ex?Normally there are 2 adjustments. One at the lever ( if it's a cable type) for cable stretch %26amp; lever location, the other is at the engine case where the clutch disks are. It's a center screw w/a lock nut. Possibly with a cap over it. You screw it in until you feel resistance %26amp; back it out a turn or two %26amp; lock it.

The way to test a clutch is to put the front wheel against a wall, put her in 1st %26amp; let the clutch out. If it stalls your probably OK.

The repair could be viewed as semi-difficult, but not to bad if you're mechanically inclined. How do i know if my clutch is going bad on honda 400ex?after adjusting your cable try this. hold your front brakes and back brakes at the same time, then hold the clutch and rev it up to 1/2 to 3/4 throtal and dump the clutch. if it kills the engine fast you have life left, if the engine dont stall right off the clutch is bad. this is only a test that should be done on a rare ocasion, dont do it every time you pull something to see if you have a clutch left or you will wear out the clutch from testing it to many times. How do i know if my clutch is going bad on honda 400ex?you can probably adjust it per the manual but be ready to completely replace it, especially if pulling others out of swamps is a regular pastime. clutch shouldn't be too hard to change if you're somewhat mechanically handy.

maybe invest in a good winch or a come along.

Does not stepping on the clutch all the way hurt the clutch or grinds the gears?

i've been driving manual for about 3 months now and got it down pretty easily.

However my friend who owns a Subaru WRX, who also kinda taught me how to drive stick, was saying how when he switches gears AFTER first, he only has to lightly tap the clutch or step on the clutch just a little bit to switch from second to third, third to fourth, and so on.

I was curious the other day and decided to try and it really switches smoothly and quietly even when you step on the clutch just a little bit after first gear. (because usually i hear the grinding noise if i mess up switching gears)

So i was wondering if doing this, wears out your clutch faster or damage it in anyway?

If it helps, I drive a Toyota Celica GT 2001. Thanks all.Does not stepping on the clutch all the way hurt the clutch or grinds the gears?First, Toyota has no such thing as a clutch brake, so don't worry about that. Second, a short lesson in mechanics may help. The whole point of a clutch is to disengage the trans from the engine so that the gears are not under load as you try to engage/ disengage them. In a properly functioning system, you cannot hurt it by depressing the pedal too far. The issue with shifting w/o clutching hasn't anything to do with the clutch and everything to do with the synchronizers and gears in the transmission. The job of the synchronizer is to brake one gear to match it to the speed of another, thereby allowing smooth engagement. When the clutch is depressed, the job isn't too hard, because the gears are not under load and they can change speed as necessary. When you shift gears without completely depressing the clutch, the gears have to match speed while under load, so the synchronizers have to work twice as hard (or more!). The harder they work the more they wear, so that action is reducing the life of the synchros and thereby the transmission. Long story short, not a good idea. If you want to save effort and time, the way I do it is to start moving the shifter as you push the pedal down. That way by the time you start to engage the next gear, the clutch is depressed and doing its job. My recommendation is to use the clutch...it's there for a reason.

God Bless!Does not stepping on the clutch all the way hurt the clutch or grinds the gears?i think if you don't hear grinding it's o.k.Does not stepping on the clutch all the way hurt the clutch or grinds the gears? When driving your car, you never want to push the clutch all the way to the floor. It is fine to just push it in 1/4 to 1/2 of the way.

You know when your setting still and you cannot get it into gear and you let up on the clutch a little bit and then push it back to the floor and it goes into gear. What you are doing by pushing the clutch all the way to the floor is engaging the %26quot;Clutch Brake%26quot;. This will completely stop the transmission from freely turning. You do not want to do this when you are going through the gears.Does not stepping on the clutch all the way hurt the clutch or grinds the gears? Not a good idea because if the clutch was new you wouldn't be able to do it. I t is only possible if the clutch is worn and not far off slippingDoes not stepping on the clutch all the way hurt the clutch or grinds the gears?i don't even push in the clutch from 2-3,3-4,4-5, only from 0-1,1-2, 0-r, or r-1

  • How do I get my 1998 Forester L to start in neutral without the clutch?

It's not giving me any problems now but I would like to know if there is a way to bypass the safety device that does not allow the car to start unless the clutch is in in case it goes bad. How do I get my 1998 Forester L to start in neutral without the clutch?Easy enough, The 'safety switch' is up under the dash connected above the clutch pedal, just like the brake light switch is on the brake pedal. All it does is interrupt the power supply from the ignition switch to the starter. It is not there to save wear and tear on the starter, it is there to stop starting in gear and the potential problems that may cause!

If it goes wrong, there are several options open to you

    1) locate the switch, remove the wiring terminal on it and simply bridge the connectors so that the circiut is not interrupted.

    2) supply a live to the starter yourself. The trigger wire is a smallish spade connector and the nearest source of a live is the bolt terminal on the starter from the battery. (NOTE- make absolutely sure the car is not in gear, make sure you dont get anything cuaght in the engine as it turns. e.g. hanging clothes etc)

    3) you can still 'bump start' the car. I.E. roll the car to 5mph or more, select second gear, drop the clutch and you are away.

I hope this helps. Incidentally, I am in the UK, and we dont get the clutch safety switch except on American imports (jeep/chrysler etc). I guess there must be some kind of legislation in the U.S. that after a certain time all cars must have it?

How do I get my 1998 Forester L to start in neutral without the clutch? There really arent any other options. The clutch is what starts the cars when you push it. the clutch is engauged and that turns the transmission which is connected to the motor and that turns the motor. Its not a safety thingHow do I get my 1998 Forester L to start in neutral without the clutch?Okay then. Here's the basic low-down on a clutch operated vehicle. See, when the clutch is engaged(i.e., the car's in gear and moving), the whole pressure plate, friction plate and gears are moving. When the clutch is dis-engaged, only the throw out bearing and the pressure plate move, nothing else does. On ALL newer vehicles with manual trannies, they ALL have a safety start neutral switch which MUST be working in order for the elecricity to get to the starter. Without that little device, the car ain't going to start. End of discussion. Yes, you CAN put the tranny into neutral and THEN push onto the safety switch in order to get the car started, but that's a pain in the tukhus! And no, removing the switch will only cause you migraines in the long run. So don't bother. If the switch is going bad, replacement is the only solution to the problem. Sorry. How do I get my 1998 Forester L to start in neutral without the clutch?Listen to Al H. The other bozo's don't know what they are talking about because if there was absolutely no way, than how do all the manual cars with a remote start work. I have no idea how it's done but try what he recommends and if you have trouble yet, look to NASIOC.com and I'm sure there is a write up for it.How do I get my 1998 Forester L to start in neutral without the clutch? You can install a remove start module that bypasses that safety device. (ie get the alarm module to turn on the ignition and fire the starter motor, independent of the clutch lock out device)

You can also jumper the connection between the safety switch and the starter motor so that circuit is always closed.

however, i don't recommend this. I once started my WRX by accident with remote start when 1st gear was engaged and the starter motor made the car roll forward a few feet before I could cut the engine. Not cool!

Travel distance for my clutch pedal is very short. How do I know if I have to replace my slave cylinder for my clutch or bleed the line on my 2003 Rubicon? You can always try to bleed it first. Or check to see if the pedal is adjustable, as is on my '94 Eclipse. If bleeding/adjusting doesn't help for more than a day or two, either the slave or master cylinder is leaking. Hopefully, it's installed outside the transmission so it'll be much easier and cheaper to replace.

When the slave cylinder on my '92 Cherokee went out, it was a slow leak (3 days of feeling the pedal lose resistance). I could also see a small puddle of hydraulic fluid under the transmission and on the bottom of it. Since it's installed inside the transmission bellhousing, I had to remove the transmission to replace it.How do I know if I have to replace my slave cylinder for my clutch or bleed the line on my 2003 Rubicon? The function of the slave cylinder is to give pressure back into the pedal so that it will come back up after you have pressed it. If the clutch pedal sinks and sits @ the bottom, you have a slave cylinder to replace. Before you replace it, warm up your car, and pump the clutch. Pressure should rise as you pump and the car warms up, but if it doesnt, you got a leaky or defective slave cylinder. Slave's arent too pricy. Can i change the throw out Bering without replacing the clutch and pressure plate if there OK?

its a 2002 Ford Mustang GT it only have 56,000 miles. the clutch feels strong like when i bought it but the throw out bering its making noises when idle. when i press the clutch pedal the squiquey noise stops. And how hard is to do it? can i doit my selfe? Can i change the throw out Bering without replacing the clutch and pressure plate if there OK?replace it all while your have the transmission out. including the slave cylinderCan i change the throw out Bering without replacing the clutch and pressure plate if there OK?Yes, you CAN change the throw out bearing yourself without replacing the clutch disc or the pressure plate, yet I'd just go ahead and replace the lot were I you. Yet that's just me. To replace it, you'll need an engine hoist; an engine stand; a clutch kit spline shaft to replace the disc and plate later on; and a gallon of acetone cleaner to clean off the mating surfaces of the plate, disc and flywheel. Being that the engine isn't an in-line engine, it'll be easy to pull out yourself. Although, a friend or two never hurts. Get a Haynes manual to help you out if you've never done it before yourself. Can i change the throw out Bering without replacing the clutch and pressure plate if there OK?you can but i don't recommend doing this, its always a good idea to change the whole thing when you got this apart, its a lot of trouble to have to go back in to it and change all that again,i wouldn't do it if it was my car, you,ll have to drop the transmission and all out,so it would be a good idea to do what all it needs at that time, good luck. Can i change the throw out Bering without replacing the clutch and pressure plate if there OK?yes you can replace just the bearing, but you will have to take the transmission out and put it back in. If you don't know what you are doing, I would not try it. Take it to someone who can fix it right. Or you can make the problem worse. Can i change the throw out Bering without replacing the clutch and pressure plate if there OK?yeah you can do it yourself but first get a manual and go over the procedure in it. study it for a day or two and make sure you have all the tools and parts, also leave plenty of time to do the job. if your clutch is still very strong and you don't ride the clutch pedal when you drive i wouldn't worry about changing that or the pressure plate. In order to change it though you'll need to drop the drive shaft, unbolt the transmission bolts from the the transmission to engine.

Good LuckCan i change the throw out Bering without replacing the clutch and pressure plate if there OK?i have alot of experience with honda, if it's anything alike the bearing is completely separate from the clutch. The pressure plate and clutch disk is bolted to the engine side so you won't need to mess with that. The bearing will be pretty much self explanatory and easy to figure out by looking at it. But it definately sounds like the bearing, my honda did the same thing i replaced the bearing and it stopped.

I don't know how easy it will be, i never worked on many fords, but you will need to drain as much gear oil as you can before removing the transmission if it has a drain plug or else your gonna have a mess. And make sure to fill it back up with gear oil after you bolt it back on and before driving it. check your manual for the recommended gear oil. I suggest picking up a repair manual like haynes or something for your car, they explain alot of repairs and maintenance step by step and have diagrams. hope this helps.

  • Problem with 2008 dodge pickup. How does hydraulics work with clutch? What does replacing cluth entail?

My 2006 dodge pickup doesn't allow manual transmission to shift as their is too much pressure. Shifts fine while not running and can shift with right rpms once going. Took to dealer and they fixed hydraulic, still has the same problem and they now want $3k to replace clutch. Something doesn't smell right? Any help on how clutch and hydraulics work?Problem with 2008 dodge pickup. How does hydraulics work with clutch? What does replacing cluth entail? It sounds like a failed pressure plate. Which does mean a new clutch is necessary. But 3 Grand for a clutch in that truck is ridiculous!

If it's an 06 it will be more expensive because it likely has a dual mass flywheel which should also be replaced with the clutch and the flywheel is stupid pricey but it still wont add up to 3K

If it is a dual mass flywheel find a shop that knows what they are doing and ask about installing a South Bend single mass conversion clutch. Excellent product, much better than stock and I charge about 2K for the entire conversion parts labor and all.

If it's an 08 then you have a Dodge single mass flywheel already so the entire clutch job including machining the flywheel, parts labor and all shouldn't cost more than $800.00 to $1000.00 depending on where you live.

Best of Luck!Problem with 2008 dodge pickup. How does hydraulics work with clutch? What does replacing cluth entail?is it an 08 or an 06 model, either way the hydraulics work about the same you got a master cylinder and a slave cylinder that works the clutch instead of a clutch cable or linkage, and i can tell you from experience it doesn't cost that much to have the clutch replaced on those trucks not even the 4 wheel drive models cost that much to repair, you need to find another repair shop or at least get a second opinion on this one,you can do two of those trucks for what they want to do that one truck,i change them in the 4 wheel drive models for about 800 bucks and that's counting parts and labor, all the hydraulic system does is make it easier to mash the clutch in and it last longer,a bad clutch wont make it shift like that it should be slipping instead of being hard to shift, good luck.

I accidentally shifted without using the clutch, how much damage did I do?

I only going like 10 mile per hour. I downshifted from 2nd to 1st but forgot the clutch (I'm still learning how to drive stick) and then I felt this grinding. How much damage did I do?I accidentally shifted without using the clutch, how much damage did I do?you caused minimal damage to your syncronizer. the drive gear and the driven gear need to be the same speed before they can be connected together. the syncronizer causes the gears to rotate at the same speed, where a quiet, smooth shift can occur. what you did was force the gears to move at different speeds. one of the gears slowed and one sped up and the grinding noise was the gears.....manuallly.....syncronizing.

don't make a habit of itI accidentally shifted without using the clutch, how much damage did I do?Tina a person can shift the car through all but 1st and reverse virtually without using the clutch every time if you learn to RPM shift. there is a point in the driving that a car will mesh smoothly into the next gear without the clutch and I have done it a lot. the grinding when you try to is because the RPM's are timed out right and yes if forced can cause damage. try using the clutch though till you are really used to driving a stick before doing this.I accidentally shifted without using the clutch, how much damage did I do?If it still works ok, you're probably ok. But don't make a habit of it as you'll soon break the synchos in the trans, making it necessary to rebuild it.I accidentally shifted without using the clutch, how much damage did I do?don't worry about that but don't keep forgetting.I accidentally shifted without using the clutch, how much damage did I do?Listen to Carl. How difficult is replacing a VW clutch?

I've got a '90 VW Cabriolet with a clutch that has started slipping. I have access to a DIY shop with hydraulic lifts and every tool I'd ever need, but is this type of thing really worth doing myself to save a few hundred bucks? How difficult is replacing a VW clutch? This is a difficult job on any car. You really need to know what you are doing. But you can learn; just buy the book. Is it worth doing yourself?? Depends on how much you like to do this kind of stuff. I like working on cars myself. How do you know if its clutch switch or wiring?

97' Honda civic won't start and its not the starter...the car starts when a wire (that a mechanic ran from starter to battery) is tapped to the battery and someone is pressing the clutch...so is it bad wiring or bad clutch switch? If its the clutch switch how much do they cost? How do you know if its clutch switch or wiring?WELL IF IT WORKS WITH A BYPASS WIRE HOOKED TO THE STARTER THEN THE WIRING TO THE STARTER NEEDS TO BE CHECKED FOR TO MUCH RESISTANCE OR BEING OPEN OR SHORTED. I WOULD FIRST CHECK YOUR POWER ON THE EXCITER WIRE WHICH ACTUALLY MAKES THE STARTER ENGAGE WHEN YOU TURN THE KEY. ALSO CHECK YOUR RELAY AND FUSE. FOR SOME REASON YOU ARE NOT GETTING POWER DOWN TO IT.How do you know if its clutch switch or wiring?what did the mechanic say/ i mean you were right there/ if he is a mechanic why didnt he recommend a fix? and why not an estimate?

How do you fix the clutch safety switch after you took out and replace the fuse #20?

We have replaced the battery and the starter. While doing this my husband was messing with the fuses, and by taking some out, I think he pulled the one out that triggers the clutch safety swtich to turn off. HOW DO YOU RESET THIS, OR DO WE HAVE TO REPLACE THE SWITCH.How do you fix the clutch safety switch after you took out and replace the fuse #20?what kind of car is this ,it helps to tell the make and year of it this way we can answer your question a lot better, taking out a fuse doesn't cause you to have to reset anything on it,he may have one in the wrong place, there are slots on some cars that aren't used he needs to recheck and make sure their are silver tips on both places where the fuses go in at,it may just be a fuse out of place on it,good luck.

How do you change a Clutch Cable on a 74 Honda CB 450 DOHC?

I was riding my cb 450 this weekend and when i pulled in the clutch I could feel a clicking. Then it seems the clutch cable snapped. The clutch handle would not spring back. Any advice or reference websites anyone can suggest on how to replace? Is it an easy fix or should I take it into the shop? Any advice would be great, Thanks. How do you change a Clutch Cable on a 74 Honda CB 450 DOHC?A CB 450 was my first bike, (loooong ago!).

    That's a good old bike.

You will need to remove the tank.

Start at the hand-lever. Disconnect the old cable.

There's a 'puck' on the cable end that fits the handle.

You must turn the cable to get it out of the slot.

(Just look carefully, you'll see how.)

turn the handle adjuster all the way in leaving max. clearance.

Install the end of the new cable.

then work down the old cable, removing it and putting the

new one in its place until you get down to the engine case.

You will have to remove the left case cover.

(An impact driver is suggested for those phillips head bolts.

they WILL be frozen in place, and a screw driver will

    likely strip the heads.)

Loosen the clutch adjuster to give you maximum play,

(screw the collar all the way in), and remove the old cable.

If you watch how it comes off it's easy to get the new one on.

There's a slotted box fitting that the 'puck' fits into.

Reinstall the side case cover, (it's a good idea to oil

the threads of those bolts before inserting them so that

they stick less next time), and adjust the clutch play

at the side cover, (that slotted round plug), by loosening

the holding bolt, turning the plug untill you've got

    tension, and retightening the bolt.

    You should be done.

You can fine tune the tension with the lever

adjuster. How do you change a Clutch Cable on a 74 Honda CB 450 DOHC?Go to shop buy cable, they will tell you in 3 minutes or less how to change and adjust, its real real easy.

I have a Yamoto 110 its an automatic with three gears is there a clutch to adjust where is it and how do i do it ??How do i adjust a clutch on an automatic with three gears quad? You have a semi-automatic clutch... their is no adjustment. The clutch is control by centrifugal force, which means the more you throttle it the better it grabs. It is a sealed unit so I do not recommend removing the side cover to gain access.
