What is wrong with my clutch system on my 1993 Nissan Maxima?

Symptoms: Pedal sticks to the floor and is very soft.



Replaced: Both the clutch master and slave cylinders and bled the system.



Problem: Pedal is still very soft and sticks to the floor still.



Anyone have any idea of what this may be and how to remedy? Please help. Run an additional half pint of fluid through the system, just to be sure. Check the caps on both cylinders and make sure they are on tight with seals in place. Make sure the bleeder fitting is tightened. Hopefully you checked the line for leaks while you were replacing things, otherwise replace the line with a SS braided line (about $30).



If there's still a problem, check the linkage from the hydraulic system to the clutch pressure plate. That larger pipe takes up noise in larger tubing and some times people forget to bleed the damper hose. Rapid pushes of the clutch and pulling the clutch pedal back up with your toe is necessary to get all the air out. I use a hose sumerged in brake fluid so air does not travel back when I pull the pedal up off of the floor. Definately go for a Valeo or LUK Clutch. Both of these are premier lines and shouldn't give any warranty problems. Try to avoid main dealers because their labour rate is crazy 50 - 100 and up per hour. Small garage might work for 30 - 40 per hour.

My advice is to price for the complete job including parts, this way if there is any trouble with the clutch when fitted, the garage is responsible for the labour costs for repair. Your VW dealer can offer exchange parts (bringing your old ones back). Val/Luk can be found in a reputable local factors (not your halfords etc). Your local garage will source them if they do the job. Price the VW one - you may be surprised (thats where i work)!
