I notice on my car while I'm driving I can take my car out of any gear without using the clutch at all, and I don't hear the gears grinding or anything. Of course I'm not able to put it back into gear without the clutch, but I can take it out. Yet you're supposed to use the clutch for the entire shift, no? Is it bad for my car to do this? How come I can take my car out of gear with no clutch? If you have forward momentum you can usually do this. How come I can take my car out of gear with no clutch? You are merely disengaging a gear - this is normal if there is little or no load on the gear. The engine revs need to be at the right level to do this. Usually at about 2500 rpms. If you accelerate to 3000 revs and then let it come down holding the gear stick and applying a small amount of pressure you will find as the revs drop that the stick will %26quot;pop%26quot; out of gear.
