How does one tell by visual inspection whether the clutch/flywheel needs to be replaced?

My 2006 G6 GTP has only 87,000 km but apparently needs to have the clutch replaced along with the flywheel. Does the appearance of burn marks indicate the need for replacement? Is it necessary to replace both or is there a less costly but feasible alternative? How does one tell by visual inspection whether the clutch/flywheel needs to be replaced?Clutches come apart into nothing for the most part when they are removed. Always get the flywheel resurfaced when replacing a clutch. as far as getting a NEW one I seriously doubt it could be that bad with only 87000miles. Unless you drove it for while with a slipping clutch maybe. How does one tell by visual inspection whether the clutch/flywheel needs to be replaced?usually you can tell by driving the car.

you should have told us what it is doing and why you think you need a new clutch.

is it slipping or is it chattering ?

you cant see it until you remove the transmission and remove the clutch.

edit.

Since you are already paying to pull the eng out.

then you should definitely put in a new cluch plate at 87,000 .

you may not need a new flywheel and what did they say about the pressure plate ?

problem is the dealer will charge such high prices for the parts.

google autozone to see how much a clutch and flywheel and pressure plate costs so you will have a better idea.as to what the parts should cost.

the labor will the same about the same ether way.How does one tell by visual inspection whether the clutch/flywheel needs to be replaced?Burn marks? The clutch for sure needs to be replaced. Such a short clutch life is not normal and whatever burned out your clutch may well have trashed the flywheel as well.

The largest cost is the amount of disassembly required to get to the clutch, and thus there is no real cheap option.

This is apparently a very common issue with G6's, which suggest a design flaw is allowing it to slip even when it should be fully engaged. How does one tell by visual inspection whether the clutch/flywheel needs to be replaced?burn marks don't necessarily mean it needs to be replaced. The flywheel can be resurfaced rather than replaced and can be used over and over again.
