How do you know when the clutch to the car is going out?

Do I have to wait til the clutch goes out all the way to change it or can I do it before it goes out?How do you know when the clutch to the car is going out?You know the clutch is slipping (bad) whe you relase the clutch on a hill, give it the gas and the engine starts to rev higher and your not going any faster.
